Washington D.C. is one of the most interesting and exciting places in the United States. One of the things the city is known for is its bountiful selection of famous museums. You may not be able to visit them all in a single vacation, but it's certainly fun to try. The Smithsonian alone has about 16 different museums. One of the most popular of the Smithsonian branches is the National Air and Space Museum which has the world's largest collection of historic air and spacecraft. It also serves as a center for research into aviation and space flight. The National Museum of American History is a great reminder of our nation's fusion of cultures and how America came to be. The National Postal museum is a rather interesting collection of more then 5.9 million items that tell the story of postal America past and present. The National Zoological Park is also a part of the Smithsonian. Located within the folds of Rock Creek Park, it is a 163-acre park located in the heart of Washington, D.C. The Zoo is free of charge and gets up to three million visitors from around the world each year.

Washington D.C. is so full of monuments, museums, galleries, landmarks and many other fun destinations that it might be a good idea to look into a guided tour. This way you can make sure you get the most out of your trip before you go exploring on your own. A tour can take you to places like the Lincoln Memorial which was based on the famous Parthenon in Greece. The memorial is a symbol of freedom. Its 36 columns are meant to represent the 36 states that were in the union at the time of Lincoln's precidency. Another landmark that would be included on the ideal city tour is The Washington Monument that's located on 15th St. The monument is one of the most popular in the city, celebrating our Nation's first president. The 555 foot high white marble exterior of this American icon, whether seen up close or at a distance is sure to leave even the most cynical traveler with a powerful impression that will last a lifetime. D.C. has even more to offer than landmarks and museums; the city has a variety of shopping, dining and entertainment destinations. Perhaps one of the most visited would be Union Station, a shopping center containing over 100 places where people can eat and shop. With over 25 million visitors a year, Union Station is the most visited attraction in the nation's capital. It's also a great start when starting up the Eastern seaboard. For a night on the town you might consider hopping on a limousine to take you to Ford's theater. Not only is the theater a historical landmark, but it houses a working theater company, dedicated to producing the plays of some of the most talented playwrights of the 20th century. You can also enjoy a night out at a local nightclub or bar, or maybe meet some locals or other tourists that are enjoying the beautiful District of Columbia. People usually get the mistaken impression that D.C. is just about politics and historical landmarks but there are many other things to do in D.C. for any taste All you have to do is plan ahead and go with an open mind.
